What does 'interest-free' BNPL really cost?

No interest, but account fees and late fees are the catch — and a fixed late fee on a small purchase is a brutal effective rate, often worse than a credit card. Source: ASIC MoneySmart.

Worked example. A $400 purchase with one $20 late fee over 2 months = $20 in fees — an effective cost of about 30% a year. Miss more instalments and it climbs fast.
