How much does a pet really cost?

More than the adoption fee. A dog runs about $4,000/year(cats less), and the costliest surprise is an emergency vet bill — which is what insurance or a buffer is for. Source: RSPCA.

Worked example. A dog: ~$3,000 upfront + ~$4,000/year over ~12 years ≈ $50,000 lifetime. A cat is cheaper per year but often lives longer, so the totals land closer than you'd think.
