What is cost per use?

Cost per use is the purchase price divided by the total number of times you expect to use an item over its life. A $200 jacket worn 144 times costs about $1.39 per wear. It is a simple way to judge whether a purchase is genuinely worth the money rather than just looking at the price tag.

How do I know if something is worth buying?

Estimate how often you will realistically use the item and how many years you will keep it, then divide the price by the total uses. As a rough guide, under $1 per use is excellent value, $1 to $5 is reasonable, and over $10 per use is a sign to pause and think. Be honest about how often you will actually use it.

Is buying expensive items ever cheaper?

Yes. A well-made $300 pair of boots worn daily for five years costs far less per wear than a $50 pair that falls apart in a season. Spending more upfront can be cheaper over time when the item lasts longer and you use it often. Cost per use exposes this where the sticker price hides it.
