Do I have to pay Division 293 tax?

Division 293 is an extra 15% tax on concessional super contributions for high earners. It triggers when your Division 293 income plus concessional contributions exceeds $250,000. It applies to the lesser of: the amount over $250,000, or your concessional contributions. This effectively raises the super tax on that slice from 15% to 30%. Source: Australian Taxation Office.

Worked example. Taxable income $240,000 + concessional contributions $30,000 = $270,000. You're $20,000 over the threshold → Div 293 tax is 15% × $20,000 = $3,000. On $280,000 + $30,000 contributions, the full $30,000 is over the threshold → tax is 15% × $30,000 = $4,500. You can elect to pay Div 293 from your super fund rather than personal cash.
