Compare the yearly cost to charge an electric car against fuelling a petrol car in Australia.

Last verified: 5 May 2026

Is an EV cheaper to run than a petrol car?

For most Australian drivers who charge at home, yes — the saving on fuel and charging is often around $1,500 to $1,800 a year. The exact gap depends on how far you drive, fuel prices and your electricity tariff. Source: typical fuel costs (ACCC) and electricity rates (AER).

Worked example. Driving 15,000km a year: a petrol car at 8 L/100km and $1.95/L costs about $2,340, while an EV at 16 kWh/100km and $0.30/kWh costs about $720 — a saving of roughly $1,620 a year, or $8,100 over five years.
