How does my net worth compare for my age?

Net worth (what you own minus what you owe) rises steeply with age as your home and super grow — so the right benchmark is the median for your age group, not the national average. The average ($1.04m) is nearly double the median ($579,200) because a few very wealthy households drag it up. Source: ABS.

Worked example. $450,000 in assets and $120,000 in debts = a $330,000 net worth. For someone aged 35 (estimated median ~$250,000) that's about 132% of the median — comfortably ahead for their age.
