How much is Rent Assistance in 2026?

From 20 March 2026, the maximum Rent Assistance rates are: $215.40 per fortnight for singles without children, $291.48 per fortnight for singles or couples with children, and $203.00 per fortnight for couples without children. Single sharers can receive up to $143.60 per fortnight.

Who is eligible for Rent Assistance?

Rent Assistance is available to people receiving a qualifying Centrelink payment such as JobSeeker, Youth Allowance, Age Pension, Parenting Payment, Austudy, or Family Tax Benefit Part A (above base rate). You must be paying rent to a private landlord — government housing tenants are generally not eligible.

How is Rent Assistance calculated?

Rent Assistance is calculated at 75 cents for every dollar of rent you pay above a minimum threshold. For a single person without children, the threshold is $152.00 per fortnight. The payment increases with your rent until it reaches the maximum rate. For example, if you pay $400/fn rent as a single person, your RA would be ($400 - $152) × 0.75 = $186.00/fn.

Does Rent Assistance cover my full rent?

No, Rent Assistance is a partial contribution towards your rent costs, not a full subsidy. The maximum payment of $291.48 per fortnight (for those with children) will not cover full rent in most areas. It is designed to help reduce the proportion of your income spent on housing.
