How long does solar take to pay for itself?

Divide your system cost by your yearly saving. A common Australian range is around 4 to 7 years, but it swings on your usage timing, feed-in tariff and power prices. Source: ASIC MoneySmart.

Worked example. A $6,000 system with a $450 quarterly bill ($1,800 a year) cut by 60% saves $1,080 a year. That's a payback of about 5.6 years and roughly $4,800 ahead over 10 years.
