How long does it take to save $1 million?

It comes down to how much you invest each month and your return — not luck. The earlier you start, the more of the work compound growth does for you. Source: ASIC MoneySmart.

Worked example. $20,000 to start, $1,500/month at a 7.5% return reaches $1,000,000 in about 22 years. You contribute roughly $400k of it — the other ~$600k is growth. Bump the monthly figure and the timeline shortens fast.
