How much should you budget for a wedding?

The commonly cited Australian average is around $35,000 (per the Easy Weddings survey). The biggest lever is your guest list — the reception (venue, catering and drinks) scales with every head, so a smaller list is the fastest way to cut the bill.

Worked example. A mid-range wedding for 80 guests: 80 × $200 per head ($16,000) + $16,000 of fixed costs (dress, suits, photography, flowers, celebrant, rings) ≈ $32,000. Over 18 months that's about $1,778 a month to save.
