How much does my savings rate matter?

Enormously — more than your return. Save 10% and financial independence is ~50 years away; 50% brings it to ~17 years; 65% to ~10. Saving more builds the nest egg and shrinks the one you need. Source: ASIC MoneySmart.

Worked example. $80,000 take-home, spending $56,000 = a 30% savings rate and roughly 28 yearsto financial independence on the 4% rule — and every extra percentage point trims it.
