How much is the private health insurance rebate in 2025-26?

The rebate tapers by income and age. Base tier (singles under $97,000, families under $194,000): 24.608% (under 65), 28.710% (65-69), 32.812% (70+). Tier 1 (singles $97,001-$113,000): 16.405% (under 65). Tier 2 ($113,001-$151,000): 8.202%. Tier 3 (over $151,000): 0% rebate regardless of age. Family thresholds are double the singles thresholds. You can take the rebate as a lower premium from your insurer or claim it as a tax offset. Source: Australian Taxation Office; Services Australia.

Worked example. Single, 40, earning $85,000 with a $1,800/year hospital + extras policy. Base-tier rebate 24.608% → ~$443 rebate → net premium ~$1,357/year. Same person at $140,000 (Tier 2) → 8.202% rebate = $148 → net $1,652. Above $151,000 (Tier 3) the full $1,800 is payable. On the MLS side, singles above $101,000 without hospital cover pay 1-1.5% surcharge (Medicare Levy Surcharge) — typically more than the premium.
